Iola Buchholz

Iola Buchholz, 95, of Tripoli, died Saturday, July 12, 2014, at Tripoli Nursing & Rehab in Tripoli, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 16, 2014, at Faith United Church of Christ in Tripoli with Rev. Marilyn Sargent officiating. Interment will follow at the Church Cemetery.  Friends may call from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 15th at Rettig Funeral Home in Tripoliand for one hour preceding services at the church on Wednesday. Memorials may be given in her name to the Tripoli Nursing Home, Cedar Valley Hospice, or Faith United Churchof Christ in Tripoli.  

Iola Emma Alvina Bahlmann Buchholz was born in Leroy Township of Bremer County, Iowa on April 25, 1919, the daughter of Herman J. Bahlmann and his wife, Helen Bergmann Bahlmann. She was baptized on May 18, 1919, at St. Paul’s Evangelical Church in Leroy Township. She was confirmed on March 25, 1934, at St. Peter’s Evangelical Church, which is now Faith United Church of Christ in Tripoli by Rev. Theodore Thomas. She attended Rima #3 Public School in Leroy Township through the eighth grade. Iola then worked as a hired girl and helped her parents on the farm. On April 24, 1938, she was united in marriage to Emil E. Buchholz of Waverly at St. Peter’s Evangelical Church in Tripoli by Rev. Thomas. To this union four children were born, a daughter, Carol Ann and three sons, Romaine R., Darrel E., and Roger A. Buchholz. Iola was a member of Faith United Church of Christ since 1934. She and her husband, Emil purchased a farm in Warren Township and remained there for forty-seven years prior to moving into Tripoli in November of 1994. She helped her husband with practically anything that needed to be done. Iola had spent nearly her entire seventy-five years on the farm. She loved flowers, cooking, and baking, and was known for making the best potato salad around. She loved her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, and babysat for them often.  

Iola is survived by one daughter, Carol Ann (Edward) Brandt of Waverly; three sons, Romaine (Karen) Buchholz of Waverly, Darrel (Janice) Buchholz of Waverly, and Roger (Darlene) Buchholz of Tripoli; thirteen grandchildren, Kimberly (Kevin) Kaiser, Scott (Sandra) Brandt, Charles Brandt, Neil (Sarah) Brandt, Lisa (Scott) Coberly, Brian (Angie) Buchholz, Brenda (Dean) Shinstine, Bradley (Leanne) Buchholz, Angie (Dale) Milligan, Jason Buchholz, Chad (Sarah) Buchholz, Dawn (Steve) Dahlstrom, and Heather (Josh) Sinnwell; twenty-eight great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; three sisters, Eldora Hagen of Marshalltown, Maxine Volker of Cresco, and LaDonna (Kenneth) Lampe of Waverly; one brother, Virgil (Wilma) Bahlmann of Clermont; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, who died on October 11, 1984; her parents; one sister, Ruth Rosol; one brother, Stanley Bahlmann; two sisters-in-law, Marian Bahlmann and Arlene Buchholz; four brothers-in-law, George Hagen, Roy Volker, Charles Rosol, and Leo Buchholz; two nieces, Barbara Hagen and Elaine Buchholz; and one nephew, Larry Rosol.
